I mean I understand this is quite improper..." And then, while staring directly at his shoes, "did you know a--" [insert name here of someone your character knew who died, probably under unfortunate circumstances]
OPTION 2 - Do you have some sort of odd family heirloom or mystery? A book in code that you need someone to look at? Books your granny had that you hope might be worth something? Have you decided to bring them to the Parrington museum for assessment? Then you'll be directed to the office of Kyle Murchison Booth, who opens his door with an expression like he'd rather be talking to anyone but you.
OPTION 3 - Are you a supernatural creature of any sort, or have any sort of magical power? That awkward, gangly, white-haired mid-thirties loser who is scurrying down the street as if he hopes he's invisible probably looks very good right now.
OPTION 4 - "I. Excuse me. Um. I appear to be... lost?" He asks it like it's a question you'll know the answer to. "Um," he adds, apparently wishing he were dead.
OPTION 5 - U toss me a top level instead, I'm easy.
